The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC) has called on the federal government of Nigeria, to establish a clear timeline to address citizens’ grievances instead of simply suppressing the protest.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Rafsanjani, CISLAC emphasised the need for decisive action on urgent issues such as inflation, unemployment, corruption, insecurity and weakening of institutional integrity; hence the need for urgent attention.
He said restoring trust is essential for citizens to believe in their country again as the integrity of our institutions is questionable
Rafsanjani, called on government to protect the rights of protesters emphasising that peaceful protest is a fundamental right in Nigeria and as such, government must ensure their safety.
According to him, demonstrations should not be organised along religious, ethnic or political lines, but all levels of government should listen and address the real concerns of the people.
The statement also called on local and state governments to use their influence to constructively solve the problems and not to put unnecessary pressure on the protesters, as it could lead to riots.
He said solving the problems that have arisen is crucial and government must come up with a clear schedule to solve these problems, instead of just trying to stop the protests or arrest those who want to protest.
CISLAC warned against military interference in internal affairs, which should be the responsibility of the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
“The army must not take the role of the police in internal affairs. Professionalism and restraint are necessary to prevent tensions,” warned Rafsanjani.
The organization however called on the protesters to remain responsible and vigilant against those who may try to use the protests for negative purposes while urging the police to protect them and ensure that the demonstration does not increase due to malicious acts.
