TCN Unveils Digital Platform To Track Grid Outages, Cut Transmission Losses

For a power system where outage data can take days to compile, the ability to see what is happening across the transmission network in minutes could change how Nigeria manages its electricity grid.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has unveiled a new Load & Outage Analytics platform designed to provide faster and more reliable data for monitoring outages, managing load and improving grid performance.

The platform was presented and demonstrated by TCN’s Operations Department at the company’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

Opening the session, TCN’s Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, commended the Operations team for developing the system in-house.

He said better visibility of the transmission network was essential to addressing technical and commercial losses, improving load management and matching electricity supply with demand.

He added that stronger control and maintenance could help reduce outages and the costs associated with prolonged interruptions.

Presenting the platform, the General Manager, Operations, Engr. Godwin Afamefuna Aguiyi, said TCN’s existing reliability reporting system was hampered by data scattered across regional spreadsheets, lengthy manual processes, inconsistent KPI calculations and a lack of audit trails.

The new Streamlit-based platform has 13 modules and brings load and outage information into a single system.

It provides views at regional, station, transformer and feeder levels, automatically classifies outages, generates reliability indicators and produces management reports within minutes.

Aguiyi said the system was developed entirely by TCN’s Operations Department, about a year after the creation of the Transmission Service Operator (TSO) department, demonstrating growing technical capacity within the company.

A demonstration using July 2026 data showed the scale of the problem. The platform recorded 3,714 outages nationwide, resulting in 48,603 MWh of load lost.

Lagos region accounted for 20,693 MWh, including 572 emergency, 306 forced and 129 planned outages.

The analysis also identified 22 feeders that exceeded allowable outage hours, with losses valued at ₦720.33 million.

The Obosi feeder in Onitsha, for instance, recorded a loss of 1,063.74 MWh at Band A rates.

TCN stressed that the figures were based on raw submissions from regional teams and were intended for cross-checking against the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s official July release.

The platform also incorporates the Fault Attribution Ratio, enabling outages to be assessed according to the party responsible.

Under the Service Level Agreement, TCN has a 30 per cent allowable downtime responsibility while DisCos account for 70 per cent, although individual outages are attributed according to the identified fault and network segment.

TCN’s Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs Abiodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi, said management would continue to provide technical teams with the tools and resources required to maintain grid stability.

The Operations Department recommended nationwide deployment of the platform, alongside IoT-enabled real-time data capture, improved internet connectivity, display systems and other infrastructure at transmission stations.

If fully deployed, the system could give TCN a clearer picture of where outages occur, how long they last and who is responsible, shifting grid reliability reporting from fragmented spreadsheets towards faster, evidence-based decision-making.
