Press Freedom Under Pressure: CISLAC Demands Urgent Reforms To Protect Nigerian Journalists

At a time when truth is increasingly contested and journalists face growing risks, the call to defend press freedom has never been more urgent.

As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) is pushing for sweeping reforms to safeguard media independence and protect journalists across Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organisation stressed that a free press remains the backbone of democracy, accountability, and national development.

Aligning with the theme set by UNESCO, “Shaping a Future of Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” CISLAC warned that any restriction on media freedom weakens public trust and fuels corruption.

Despite Nigeria’s slight rise to 112th position in the latest ranking by Reporters Without Borders, CISLAC described the media landscape as hostile, citing harassment, arbitrary arrests, and attacks on journalists.

It also flagged the misuse of laws such as the Cybercrimes Act to intimidate reporters, alongside political interference and growing economic pressures.

Rafsanjani emphasised that safeguarding press freedom goes beyond legal reforms.

He called for better wages, improved working conditions, and stronger protections to ensure journalists can operate independently and professionally without fear or financial hardship.

The organisation further urged the Nigerian government to amend restrictive laws, enforce the Freedom of Information Act, and ensure perpetrators of attacks on journalists are swiftly prosecuted.

It also advocated enhanced safety measures, including digital security training and rapid response systems for journalists under threat.

CISLAC reaffirmed its commitment to defending media freedom, stressing that a vibrant, independent press is essential to peace, development, and democratic stability.

“A free press is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” the statement declared.
