Nigeria, EU Set To Scale Up Strategic Partnership Ahead Of 2026 Ministerial Talks
Nigeria and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening a strategic partnership that spans economic growth, security, climate action and people-to-people ties, signalling a renewed push for tangible outcomes in the years ahead.
This assurance was given in Abuja on Tuesday when the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Gautier Mignot, in a high-level engagement focused on strengthening bilateral relations.
Ambassador Ahmed described the EU as one of Nigeria’s most critical development partners, noting that cooperation has continued to expand across various sectors, including trade and investment, peace and security, governance, agriculture, health, education, the digital economy, and humanitarian assistance.
He stressed that the Tinubu administration remains firmly committed to economic diversification, with priority placed on agriculture, innovation, climate-smart development and digital transformation.
Nigeria’s regional leadership role also came into focus, with the Permanent Secretary highlighting the country’s efforts in promoting peace and stability in West Africa and calling for sustained EU collaboration on counter-terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and post-conflict recovery.
He further advocated stronger support for climate adaptation, energy transition, green technology transfer and humane, cooperative migration frameworks that prioritise youth empowerment.
In response, EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot praised the strong alignment between Nigeria’s national priorities and the EU’s strategic objectives, describing 2026 as a “pivotal year” for advancing the partnership.
He disclosed that preparations are underway for a Nigeria-EU Ministerial Meeting proposed for March 2026 in Abuja, expected to drive cooperation through structured dialogue and concrete commitments.
Ambassador Mignot also spotlighted the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, which is mobilising investments in infrastructure, digital connectivity, clean energy, agriculture and youth-focused programmes, while reinforcing Nigeria’s peace, security and regional stabilisation efforts.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, expressing confidence that Nigeria-EU relations will continue to grow stronger with measurable impact.
