ECOWAS Police, Gendarmerie Chiefs Meet In Abuja To Bolster Regional Security
Senior police and gendarmerie officers from across West Africa have gathered in Abuja for the Annual Regional Meeting of ECOWAS Police and Gendarmerie Focal Points, aimed at deepening cross-border security cooperation.
The two-day event, convened by the ECOWAS Commission’s Directorate of Peacekeeping and Regional Security, is focusing on improving information sharing and creating a comprehensive roster of police personnel across member states.
Opening the meeting, the Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO) and Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, William Fayia Sellu represented by Deputy Inspector General Sahr Y. Senesi stressed the need for strong structures and mechanisms to boost operational readiness.
Dr Sani A. Adamu, Acting Head of ECOWAS’ Peace Support Operations Division, speaking on behalf of Director Dr Cyriaque P. Agnekethom, called for greater coordination among security agencies, saying this was vital to tackling the region’s evolving threats.
The gathering is expected to set the tone for stronger joint policing efforts across ECOWAS in the months ahead.
