Tompolo’s Niger Delta Contributions Deserve Recognition, Ododo’s Supporter Says

A political mentor can command respect without diminishing a governor’s authority, according to Joy Omagha Idam, who has defended Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s description of Niger Delta figure Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, as his mentor and benefactor.

Idam, in an article, argued that Ododo’s expression of gratitude should not be mistaken for weakness, insisting that Tompolo’s reported contributions to humanitarian services, community development and Niger Delta security deserve a broader assessment.

The controversy followed Ododo’s reported remarks at an event in Lokoja on October 12, 2026, where he acknowledged Tompolo’s support for his political journey.

The occasion also featured the presentation of 25 campaign vehicles by Tompolo’s PBAT Door-to-Door Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Responding to criticism that the governor’s remarks suggested low self-esteem, Idam said political office did not automatically make its holder superior to traditional rulers, philanthropists, community leaders and other influential figures.

She noted that Tompolo’s public profile extends beyond his controversial past in Niger Delta agitation to business, pipeline surveillance and reported philanthropic interventions.

These include healthcare improvements, relief materials for flood victims, educational support and investments in community development. His company, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, has also participated in pipeline surveillance operations aimed at tackling crude oil theft and vandalism.

Idam acknowledged that Tompolo’s history remains part of the public record, stressing that his activities and contributions should be assessed objectively and supported by verifiable evidence.

She, however, maintained that humanitarian interventions should not be dismissed solely because of the benefactor’s past controversies.

While Nigerians have legitimate reasons to question political relationships, campaign support and transparency, Idam said such concerns should be distinguished from assumptions about a governor’s self-esteem.

She argued that Ododo should ultimately be judged by his decisions, accountability and performance in office, rather than his willingness to acknowledge a mentor.

“Respect is not weakness, gratitude is not inferiority, and mentorship does not automatically diminish leadership,” Idam maintained.

She added that the central issue was whether Ododo continued to govern responsibly, transparently and in the public interest, not whether he acknowledged another individual’s influence in his political journey.
