Enugu 2027: Coalition Demands Police Probe Of Shooting, Challenges Candidates On Records

A coalition of civil society organisations has called for an impartial police investigation into a reported shooting outside the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secretariat in Enugu, alongside a probe of the 10 October confrontation at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, as political tensions rise ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CCSGG), speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, also challenged NDC candidate Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Uche Nnaji to provide verifiable answers to questions surrounding their public records.

The coalition urged the police to investigate the reported shooting and prosecute anyone found responsible, while asking the NDC to publish any authorisation it obtained for its proposed gathering at the international airport.

It warned political parties against circulating unverified casualty figures and inflammatory accounts of the incidents, insisting that allegations must be backed by evidence.

On the airport controversy, the group said political campaigns must comply with lawful security requirements, stressing that an international airport is a sensitive federal facility whose operations and security must not be compromised by partisan activities.

The coalition also said the information before it contained no publicly established evidence that Governor Peter Mbah ordered or participated in either incident.

It urged anyone with evidence implicating the governor or other individuals to submit it to the police through lawful channels.

Beyond the incidents, the coalition called on Ohaa to publish records showing the final outcome of a reported 2018 case, identified as CR/76/18, and clarify questions concerning an earlier Economic and Financial Crimes Commission matter and an alleged ₦200 million demand during a budget-defence process.

Nnaji was also urged to provide independently verifiable answers to questions raised about his academic and National Youth Service Corps credentials.

The group stressed that the allegations and unresolved questions did not establish guilt and that due process must determine criminal responsibility.

It also called on the NDC to address allegations about its primary election and treatment of aspirants, while urging all governorship candidates to publish detailed manifestos setting out measurable programmes, funding strategies, and implementation priorities.

The coalition also asked security agencies to guarantee equal protection for all political parties and urged political actors to reject violence, intimidation and misinformation.

In a statement signed by Comrade Okpanachi Jacob on behalf of the coalition, the group said Enugu’s political future should be determined by evidence, governance records and credible policy alternatives rather than inflammatory rhetoric.

It urged the candidates to respect investigations, answer legitimate questions with authenticated documents and focus their campaigns on practical solutions to the state’s development challenges.
