UNIPORT, UNIBEN Innovations Shine At Engineering Olympiad
Nigeria’s push for home-grown technological solutions gained fresh momentum as students from the University of Port Harcourt and University of Benin emerged winners of the South-South regional finals of the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO), showcasing groundbreaking innovations aimed at solving real-life challenges.
At the competition held at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board headquarters in Yenagoa, Team PROTRONICS from UNIPORT and Team VHORDE from UNIBEN outperformed other participating universities with technology-driven solutions focused on energy efficiency and support for visually impaired persons.
Team PROTRONICS unveiled “KEYTRIC”, a smart energy door lock designed to automatically switch off electricity when users leave their homes, helping to cut energy bills and reduce fire risks.
Meanwhile, Team VHORDE presented “IRIS” an AI-powered wearable smart glasses system created to assist visually impaired Nigerians through real-time object detection, face recognition and voice interaction.
Speaking during the event, NCDMB official Engr. Dokubo Obongo described the projects as “top-notch”, noting that the Olympiad was designed to encourage Nigerian universities to develop practical and market-ready innovations capable of addressing local problems.
Country Director of Enactus Nigeria, Michael Ajayi, announced that the regional winners from across the six geopolitical zones would proceed to a national boot camp ahead of the championship finale, where the top three teams will share N100 million in prizes.
