TCN Nabs Two Suspects Over Vandalism Of Ebonyi Transmission Line

Nigeria’s power infrastructure continues to come under threat from vandals, a development experts say is worsening electricity instability and costing the nation billions of naira in damages.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to the vandalism of Towers T15, T16, and T17 along the Nkalagu-Abakaliki 132kV Single-Circuit Transmission Line in Ebonyi State.

In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the suspects, Obinna Nweke and Monday Ezike, were arrested on May 9, 2026, following a tip-off by members of the Ezza Umuhuali Community in Ishielu Local Government Area.

According to TCN, local youths and vigilante operatives apprehended the suspects after investigations revealed that structural tower components worth billions of naira had allegedly been removed from the transmission towers and sold to illegal scrap metal dealers.

The company disclosed that the vandalism had reportedly been ongoing since January 2026 before the suspects were caught.

TCN stated that the suspects have been handed over to the Nigerian Police at Ishielu Police Station, Ntezi, and subsequently charged before the Ebonyi State High Court. Efforts continue to track down other accomplices still at large.

Condemning the act, TCN described the vandalism as economic sabotage capable of disrupting electricity supply to Ebonyi State and neighbouring communities.

The company also commended the swift intervention of the Ezza Umuhuali youths and vigilante group, urging communities nationwide to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations.
