ECOWAS Agencies Deepen Collaboration On Water, Energy and Food Security With Gender Focus
As climate pressures, food insecurity and energy challenges continue to test West Africa’s resilience, regional institutions are intensifying efforts to build integrated and gender-responsive solutions across critical sectors.
Specialised agencies of the Economic Community of West African States have strengthened their framework for collaboration on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus with a strong emphasis on gender inclusion during a high-level inter-agency meeting held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The third ECOWAS inter-agency meeting, held from May 15 to 16, 2026, at the ECOWAS Resident Mission in Abidjan, reviewed progress made in implementing activities linked to the water-energy-food-environment nexus and gender mainstreaming across the region.
Participants also explored new opportunities for joint action and operational projects aimed at improving sustainable development outcomes within the ECOWAS community.
The meeting built on discussions from the second edition held in Praia, Cape Verde, in July 2025, where project ideas were first conceptualised.
This year’s gathering focused on translating those ideas into concrete collaborative initiatives.
Officials said the strengthened partnership framework is expected to support more coordinated regional responses to environmental sustainability, food security, energy access and women’s inclusion in development processes.
