INEC Debunks Fake X Post, Warns Impostors Of Legal Action

As Nigeria inches closer to key electoral milestones, concerns over misinformation are once again testing public trust in democratic institutions.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly denied claims that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has a personal account on X, formerly Twitter.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission described as false and malicious a viral post suggesting that the INEC Chairman had endorsed a partisan message online.

INEC stated that the claim was a deliberate fabrication intended to undermine the neutrality and integrity of the electoral body.

The Commission stressed that Prof. Amupitan does not operate any personal X account and has never made partisan comments in either his private or official capacity.

INEC also raised the alarm over the growing activities of cybercriminals using fake accounts in the Chairman’s name to deceive Nigerians.

It said several such accounts had been reported in the past and warned that those behind the latest misinformation would be tracked and prosecuted under the Cybercrimes Act.

The Commission urged Nigerians to ignore the false claims and rely only on its verified platforms and official statements for accurate information.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections, insisting it would not be distracted by digital mischief.
