NCC Launches Working Group To Tackle Online Fraud, AI Risks

As artificial intelligence, online fraud and harmful digital content expose internet users to growing risks, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched an Internet Governance Working Group to strengthen online safety, privacy and accountability.

The working group was unveiled on Thursday, 15 October 2026, at the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium in Lagos, with a mandate to promote sustained stakeholder engagement and coordinated action on Nigeria’s digital challenges.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, who represented the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, said internet governance directly affected people’s opportunities, security, trust and rights.

He warned that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence was creating new concerns around harmful content, online fraud, data privacy and child protection, stressing that no single institution could tackle the challenges alone.

Oshadami highlighted the NCC’s Internet Code of Practice (ICOP) 2026 and the Cyber Resilience Framework for the Nigeria Communications Sector as key initiatives to promote responsible internet use and strengthen the security of digital infrastructure.

He said the effectiveness of these frameworks would depend on consistent implementation, clear expectations and meaningful collaboration among stakeholders.

The newly established working group is expected to provide a permanent platform for dialogue, identify priority issues and translate internet governance discussions into practical measures to protect Nigerians online.

Oshadami urged participants to commit to concrete action, saying sustained cooperation was essential to building a safer, more secure and responsible digital environment for the country.
