Fasting Season: AWALCO Urges Journalists To Pray For Peace As West Africa Faces Mounting Pressures
At moments when faith traditions converge in reflection, leaders often see a chance for collective healing.
As Christians enter Lent and Muslims prepare for fasting, the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO) has called on its members to turn the season into a force for peace and renewal across the sub-region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, AWALCO President, Mr Innocent Odoh, urged journalists covering legislative affairs to use the fasting period to seek divine guidance, personal renewal and stability for West Africa, amid worsening insecurity, economic hardship and political uncertainty.
Odoh described fasting as more than a religious duty, saying it offers a moment for self-examination and recommitment to values that promote unity, justice and compassion.
He challenged members to allow the season to shape their professional conduct, encouraging ethical journalism, empathy in reporting and a renewed dedication to truth, peace-building and accountability.
Highlighting the human cost of the region’s multiple crises, the AWALCO President called for special prayers for displaced persons, women, children and communities affected by violence and economic pressures, stressing that the media has a responsibility to amplify vulnerable voices with sensitivity and integrity.
A statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, quoted the President as reaffirming AWALCO’s commitment to professional excellence and regional cooperation, expressing hope that the spiritual season would strengthen journalists’ resolve to contribute positively to democratic governance and social stability in West Africa.
