As the Benin Kingdom prepares for the consumption of the new yam, the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku’Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has called for a period of fasting and prayer for peace, protection and wellbeing across Edo State.
The Benin Traditional Council, in a statement dated September 11, 2026, said the monarch directed all sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom, as well as indigenes and non-indigenes living in Edo State, to observe the 14-day spiritual exercise.
The fasting will run from Monday, September 14, to Sunday, September 27, 2026, daily from 6am to 6pm.
According to the Council, the observance is rooted in an age-old Benin tradition preceding the consumption of the new yam, known as Emorho.
Participants are expected to pray to God Almighty and the royal ancestors for peace and tranquillity, while seeking protection for their families, Edo State and Nigeria from death and evil occurrences.
The statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, Osai Igubaro, said the Oba also prayed for peace and happiness as residents undertake the exercise.
