ECOWAS Adopts Standby Force Training Policy To Boost Regional Peace, Security

In a decisive move to enhance West Africa’s ability to respond to security threats, ECOWAS has endorsed a unified Training Policy for Peace Support Operations, marking a major step towards operationalising its Standby Force.

The endorsement came during a High-Level Governmental Experts’ Validation Meeting held in Abuja, bringing together defence and security experts from ECOWAS Member States, technical directorates, and international partners including the European Union, BMZ, GIZ, Expertise France, and AECID.

The new policy sets out a comprehensive framework for training military, police, and civilian personnel involved in peace operations.

It is rooted in key principles such as human rights, gender inclusion, and conflict prevention all central pillars of the ECOWAS Vision 2050 agenda.

According to the ECOWAS Commission, the initiative aims to make the ECOWAS Standby Force a fully mission-ready tool for rapid deployment, capable of delivering coordinated responses to emerging crises across the region.

“This policy reflects our growing commitment to peace and security in West Africa,” said one of the organisers. “It also shows that our regional efforts are increasingly aligned with global best practices and international cooperation.”

As insecurity continues to pose complex challenges across the sub-region, ECOWAS’ renewed focus on preparedness and training signals a stronger, more united front in the quest for lasting peace and stability.
