ECOWAS Donates 500 Metric Tons of Rice To Support Sierra Leone’s Food Security Efforts

In a strong show of regional solidarity, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated 500 metric tons of white rice to Sierra Leone to support its National Response Plan and the government’s flagship Feed Salone initiative.

The official handover ceremony took place on 14th July 2025 in Bo City, with ECOWAS Resident Representative to Sierra Leone, Ambassador John Azumah, presenting the food aid on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission President, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, and Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mrs Massandjé Touré-Litsé.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone was Dr Therisa Tenneh Dick, Deputy Minister 1, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Ambassador Azumah used the opportunity to congratulate President Brigadier General (Rtd) Dr Julius Maada Bio on his recent appointment as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The intervention, drawn from the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve, aims to provide urgent relief to vulnerable communities across Sierra Leone currently facing food insecurity.

“This donation reflects ECOWAS’ commitment to strengthening food sovereignty and risk management through a three-tier food security storage system local stocks, national reserves, and regional buffers,” Ambassador Azumah said.

The gesture is part of ECOWAS’ broader mission to promote resilience, reduce hunger, and foster unity across West Africa in times of need.
