In a powerful show of respect for tradition and strategy for political goodwill, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, led top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, to seek royal blessings for the party’s governorship candidate, Prince Dr. Nicholas Ukachukwu, and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.

The visit, which took place on Friday, 31st October 2025, came just days before the November 8 Anambra gubernatorial election and marked the official flag-off of the APC campaign in the state.

Senator Akpabio, who described himself as an in-law to Anambra and a representative of the Presidency, hailed Igwe Achebe as one of Nigeria’s most revered monarchs.

“Your Majesty stands among the top three traditional rulers in our nation,” he said, adding that the visit was to honour the throne and seek divine guidance for the campaign.

He announced the inauguration of the APC Ukachukwu-Ekwunife Campaign Council, expressing confidence that with royal blessings, the party would triumph at the polls.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, representing the 24 APC governors nationwide, thanked the Obi for his warm reception and assured him of the party’s commitment to peace and progress in Anambra.

APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, also appreciated the monarch’s hospitality, urging him to extend his fatherly prayers to the candidates as they embark on their campaign journey.

Responding, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe, offered royal blessings and prayers for Prince Ukachukwu, Senator Ekwunife, and the entire APC delegation, wishing them success in their electoral pursuit.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, four Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, the APC Anambra State Chairman Hon. Basil Ejidike, Mrs Ugochi Mitchel Ukachukwu, and the members of Obi’s cabinet, alongside women and youth leaders who filled the palace courtyard with cheers and chants of solidarity.
