Adamu Makes History As Nigeria Claims Top CAF Job
A Nigerian football administrator is on the verge of making history at the highest level of African football administration, with Samson Adamu reportedly appointed permanent General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
If formally confirmed, the appointment would make Adamu the first Nigerian to hold the position on a permanent basis, marking a major milestone for the country’s representation in continental football governance.
SavidNews understands that the appointment follows his tenure as acting General Secretary, a role he assumed in March 2026 after the departure of Véron Mosengo-Omba, who served in the position for more than five years.
CAF had initially announced Adamu’s appointment on an interim basis while the organisation worked towards selecting a substantive successor.
Before taking charge of the administration, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he gained extensive experience in organising competitions and coordinating activities involving national football associations and other stakeholders across Africa.
His work placed him at the centre of the planning and delivery of major continental tournaments, a responsibility that requires close coordination among organisers, participating countries and other football authorities.
Beyond his work at CAF, Adamu contributed to the growth of beach soccer in Nigeria through the COPA Lagos invitational tournament, which helped raise the profile of the sport in the country.
The General Secretary’s position is one of the most important administrative offices within CAF.
It involves overseeing the organisation’s day-to-day operations, implementing decisions taken by its leadership and coordinating administrative activities across the continent.
Adamu’s reported elevation comes at a time when CAF continues to manage major competitions and strengthen the administration of African football.
Mosengo-Omba announced his departure in March, saying he wanted to devote more time to personal projects. CAF President Patrice Motsepe subsequently thanked him for his contributions to the development of African football.
For Nigeria, Adamu’s reported appointment could strengthen the country’s presence in the decision-making structures of the continental governing body.
As at the time of filing this report, CAF’s formal confirmation of the appointment is still required before it can be treated as official.
If confirmed, Adamu’s elevation would represent both a personal career milestone and a significant moment for Nigerian football administration.
