Activist Embarks On Hunger Strike Over Low Voter Registration In South-East

Human rights activist and social crusader, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, has begun a 14-day self-imposed hunger strike to protest the failure of South-East leaders to mobilise citizens for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Ezekwueme, a member of the Civil Liberties Organisation, said the action became necessary after repeated appeals to governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and market unions in the region were ignored.

He lamented that the South-East remains the least registered zone, with poor turnout also recorded in the current CVR.

Describing the situation as “pathetic and despicable,” he stressed that less than 20 per cent of registered voters in the region actually cast their ballots during elections.

According to him, sensitisation for voter registration is more critical than election campaigns, as “only those who register can vote.”

He urged citizens to overcome political apathy and indifference, warning that “if we do not take interest in politics, it will certainly take interest in us.”

Ezekwueme called on all stakeholders to join hands to “reclaim, regain, redeem and restore” the South-East’s political relevance and respect through active voter participation.
