Black Christmas: Activist Calls For Power Minister’s Resignation Over Nationwide Outages
A season meant for light, celebration and economic buzz was instead plunged into darkness, as persistent power outages marred Christmas festivities across Nigeria.
A prominent human rights activist and Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, has demanded the immediate resignation of the Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, over what he described as a failure of leadership in the electricity sector.
In a statement released on Friday, Obi expressed deep concern over widespread blackouts recorded during the Yuletide, a period known for increased electricity demand by households, businesses and social activities.
He described the outages as unacceptable, saying Nigerians were denied stable power when they needed it most.
According to him, the inability of the Power Ministry to anticipate and prepare for festive demand further compounded the hardship faced by families and small-scale businesses already struggling with high living costs.
Obi argued that in a system driven by accountability, the Minister should voluntarily step aside and apologise to Nigerians for failing to meet expectations.
He also questioned Adelabu’s suitability for the role, describing his appointment as a mismatch for such a critical sector.
He stressed that reliable electricity remains vital to economic growth and quality of life, warning that repeated blackouts, especially during festive periods, erode public confidence and heighten public frustration.
“In a civilised society, he should not wait to be asked to resign. The power sector needs leadership with vision and capacity, which is clearly lacking,” Obi said.
