Anambra 2025: Journalists Warn Against Rising Violence, Urge Peace Ahead Of Governorship Poll
With just three months to the Anambra governorship election, the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has raised alarm over renewed killings and attacks across the state, warning that unchecked violence could undermine peace and stability.
In a statement signed by Interim President, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, and Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, LAJA described the resurgence of insecurity as “deplorable and devastating,” noting that recent high-profile killings, including the abduction and murder of a senior official’s son and the assassination of an APC ward chairman in Nri, have left residents anxious.
While acknowledging efforts by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to address security challenges, the journalists questioned why violence by non-state actors has spiked again after earlier progress.
They called for an enhanced security strategy, stressing the need for better training, modern tools, welfare support for operatives, and the deployment of technology to restore public confidence.
The body also urged politicians and voters to shun violence, whether physical or verbal, as campaigns intensify, while commending the government’s swift action in dismissing officers who assaulted a Corps Member.
“Security in this age must combine technology with robust community engagement,” the statement read. “Only then can Anambra return to the path of peace as the election draws near.”
