Elumelu Urges Stronger Media, Intelligence Synergy To Tackle Disinformation At DICAN Conference

At the maiden International Diplomatic and Security Conference organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) in Abuja, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, issued a passionate call for coordinated efforts in combating the rising threat of disinformation.

Speaking to a distinguished audience of diplomats, security experts, policymakers, and journalists, Elumelu described disinformation as a “weapon” that can no longer be treated lightly.

He stressed that Nigeria must harness the combined power of diplomacy, intelligence, and a responsible media to preserve its democracy and global reputation.

“We are living in an era where disinformation travels faster than the truth,” Elumelu remarked. “Only through synergy among the media, intelligence agencies, and our diplomatic corps can we successfully defend our national image and counter harmful narratives.”

Highlighting the theme of the conference “Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Amidst Global Security Challenges…” Elumelu underscored the importance of the 4Ds: Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography.

He urged that these pillars be treated not just as talking points but as practical tools to drive Nigeria’s global influence and internal cohesion.

“Democracy and development must be seen as foreign policy currency,” he said. “Our diaspora and youthful demography must be purposefully engaged in shaping Nigeria’s story on the world stage.”

Elumelu praised DICAN for hosting such a timely gathering and called on government and stakeholders to equip the media with the tools needed to function as credible watchdogs.

He also encouraged the deepening of collaboration with international partners, and investment in local intelligence capacity and media literacy.

Panel discussions at the conference explored critical topics, including digital diplomacy, countering global misperceptions, and intelligence-led foreign relations.

As Nigeria navigates complex global threats — from cyber warfare to climate migration Elumelu’s message was clear: the nation must act with clarity, purpose, and unity, or risk letting others define its narrative.
