In a powerful celebration of ethical journalism and regional unity, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has honoured twelve exceptional journalists from across West Africa, spotlighting their contributions to peacebuilding, integration, and development through impactful storytelling.
The 2025 ECOWAS Media Awards, held as part of the organisation’s 50th anniversary and Vision 2050 agenda in Banjul, the Gambia, highlighted the vital role of the media in fostering democratic resilience and citizen participation across the region.
Welcoming guests to the ceremony, Mrs Miatta Lily French, ECOWAS Resident Representative in The Gambia, hailed the courage and originality of the awardees, describing them as “voices carrying the vision of West Africa’s future.”
Delivering a message on behalf of ECOWAS Commission President, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, the organisation’s Director of Cabinet, Hon. Abdoul Kolley, reaffirmed ECOWAS’ unwavering commitment to media as a trusted ally in promoting stability and inclusivity.
“This recognition is not just a celebration of talent, but a reaffirmation that storytelling when guided by truth and responsibility can reshape narratives and build bridges across nations,” Kolley stated.
The annual awards are expected to grow into a key pillar of ECOWAS’ efforts to strengthen journalism across the sub-region, spotlighting professionals who go beyond headlines to amplify the voices and values that bind West Africa together.
