NDLEA Seizes N7bn Tramadol At Lagos Port, Arrests 85-Year-Old Woman With 179kg Cannabis
An 85-year-old grandmother has been arrested with 179kg of cannabis in Edo State, while the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a Saudi Arabia-bound cannabis consignment concealed in a gallon of palm oil at Kano airport.
The operations also led to the seizure of 8,725kg of powdered tramadol worth over N6.98 billion at the Apapa port in Lagos, in a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking.
The NDLEA said its operatives intercepted the Saudi-bound consignment on Friday, 16 October, during the clearance of an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Jeddah via Addis Ababa.
The suspect, Fatimah Ahmad, allegedly told officers that her cousin, Abubakar Yahaya, gave her the gallon. He was subsequently arrested at the airport car park.
At Apapa port, officers recovered 349 bags of tramadol hydrochloride powder imported from India and declared as maize starch.
A separate operation at Tincan port uncovered 55kg of Canadian Loud, valued at N165 million, concealed inside a Toyota Sienna vehicle in a shipping container.
In Lagos, operatives also recovered 10,600 ampoules of diazepam injection, 6,500 tablets of Molly and 18,000 tramadol pills during separate raids and interceptions.
The crackdown extended to Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna and the Federal Capital Territory, where officers seized large quantities of cannabis and opioids and arrested several suspects.
In Ondo State, NDLEA operatives destroyed 7,500kg of cannabis at a farm spanning three hectares and arrested five suspects.
In Bauchi, officers intercepted 894,800 pills of tramadol capsules and Exol-5 tablets, while another operation recovered 265kg of cannabis from an abandoned vehicle.
In Kaduna, three suspects were arrested with 496.5kg of cannabis. Officers also seized thousands of tramadol tablets and capsules in Kano and Abuja.
Commenting on the operations, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers in the affected commands for their intelligence-led operations and urged them to sustain the fight against drug trafficking networks.
He also called for continued drug prevention sensitisation through the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse campaign in schools, religious centres, workplaces and communities.
The agency said the latest operations formed part of its continuing efforts to disrupt drug supply networks and strengthen drug abuse prevention across the country.
