48 Young Nigerians Begin Specialised Subsea Engineering Training To Boost Local Oil Industry
Forty-eight Nigerians are taking a step towards specialised careers in the oil and gas industry as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) partners with two companies to bridge critical skills gaps in subsea engineering.
The 12-month programme, launched in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is designed to equip participants with technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed for offshore and deepwater operations.
The initiative brings together NCDMB, Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited and Global Ocean Engineers Nigeria Limited, with six months of classroom instruction followed by six months of structured on-the-job training.
Speaking at the kick-off ceremony on Friday, 16 October 2026, NCDMB Executive Secretary, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by the General Manager, Human Capacity Development, Emelle Alexis, said the training would prepare the participants for the demands of complex subsea operations.
He stressed that technical competence, professionalism and strict adherence to safety standards were essential to the safe and reliable operation of modern oil and gas facilities.
The curriculum covers risers and hydrodynamics engineering, offshore structures design, pipeline engineering and computer-aided design and drafting (AutoCAD).
Heritage Energy’s Manager, Nigerian Content Development, Felix Osiwo, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to developing local expertise, noting that a skilled Nigerian workforce was crucial to delivering energy infrastructure projects and sustaining industry growth.
Similarly, Global Ocean Engineers Nigeria Limited Managing Director, George Ebuh, represented by Ifedolapo Aderibigbe, described the programme as a strategic investment in indigenous subsea engineering capacity.
The trainees welcomed the opportunity to acquire specialised skills, highlighting safety training and AutoCAD as important areas of learning.
The programme forms part of NCDMB’s Top 10 Field Readiness Human Capacity Development initiatives, aimed at strengthening local participation in high-value oil and gas activities, promoting technology transfer and developing the expertise required for offshore and deepwater operations.
