Moneme: Money Cannot Buy Voter Conviction, Women Want Credible Candidates
Women voters will not automatically back female politicians simply because they share the same gender, PRP senatorial aspirant for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Juliet Hasana-Moneme, has said.
Moneme made the submission during an interactive media engagement organised by the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA), where she was asked what it would take to secure the support of women voters.
She said women were looking for credibility, a proven record and clear plans, rather than simply voting for a woman.
“Women believe in credibility,” Moneme said, stressing that female candidates must earn voters’ confidence rather than assume automatic support.
She said she had been engaging women’s organisations and community groups to explain her plans, hear their concerns and allow them to make informed decisions about her candidacy.
According to her, her years of working with women and community organisations had given her an understanding of issues affecting women and families.
While acknowledging that money remains an important part of Nigerian election campaigns, Moneme rejected the belief that financial muscle alone guarantees victory.
“Money is needed in politics. But money is not everything,” she said.
She explained that candidates need money for campaign materials, publicity, transportation and the welfare of polling-unit agents, but argued that financial resources cannot replace genuine voter conviction.
Moneme said her record of community interventions and empowerment initiatives would give voters something tangible to assess beyond campaign promises.
She also said her ambition is not limited to winning the support of women, expressing confidence that both male and female voters would support her based on her capacity, record and what she intends to offer the FCT.
Moneme is the PRP flag bearer contesting for the FCT senatorial seat.
