In every military institution, discipline is the backbone of national security. When that discipline is threatened, the response is often swift and decisive.
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny linked to an attempt to overthrow the government.
The move, announced on 24 April 2026, follows an earlier DHQ statement issued on 26 January on the same matter and signals a major step in enforcing accountability within the Armed Forces.
According to the military high command, the court-martial will ensure that all cases are handled with fairness, impartiality, and strict adherence to due process under the existing military justice system.
The DHQ said the proceedings reflect its commitment to professionalism, discipline and the protection of national integrity, while also guaranteeing the rights of the accused and upholding the principle of fair hearing.
The military authorities maintained that justice would be served without fear or favour as the Armed Forces continue efforts to preserve constituted authority and national stability.
