Interior Minister Seals Media Partnership To Rebuild Trust In Security
In a country where rumours travel faster than facts, the government is betting on stronger ties with journalists to fix the trust gap around security and citizenship issues.
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), pledging deeper collaboration to enhance transparency, public engagement, and accurate reporting on internal security, border management, and citizenship integrity.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by NUJ leaders in Abuja, the minister described the Interior Ministry as “the Ministry of the people,” stressing that its work directly affects every Nigerian.
He warned that silence from public institutions creates room for speculation, insisting that proactive communication is key to rebuilding public confidence.
Tunji-Ojo welcomed proposals for regular press briefings and structured interface sessions stating that consistent engagement would help citizens understand the ongoing reforms and innovations within the Ministry.
While commending balanced coverage by the media, he also acknowledged the value of constructive criticism in strengthening governance and refining policy.
NUJ President, Alhassan Yahaya, said the Union was keen to deepen institutional ties, proposing quarterly ministerial briefings and inviting the minister to address its next NEC meeting.
The NUJ also pushed for collaboration through its training institute to equip journalists with stronger skills in security reporting and responsible information dissemination.
Both sides agreed that sustained dialogue between the government and the media is critical to public trust, national cohesion and informed citizenship, especially at a time when security concerns dominate public debate.
