NUJ Demands Independent Probe Into Deaths Of 37 Suspected Illegal Miners In Niger Custody
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for a full, independent and transparent investigation into the reported deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
In a statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union said the deaths raised serious public concerns and demanded that the circumstances surrounding the arrests, detention and deaths of the victims be established without interference.
The NUJ said the investigation should determine the conditions in which the suspects were held, including access to ventilation, food, water, sanitation and medical care, as well as the scientifically established causes and manner of death.
It also called for appropriate medical, forensic and autopsy examinations and urged authorities to protect survivors, witnesses and the families of the deceased from intimidation or retaliation.
The union welcomed the reported suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant pending investigation, as well as directives by the Federal and Niger State governments to investigate the incident.
While acknowledging the need to tackle illegal mining, the NUJ stressed that enforcement must comply with the Constitution, rule of law and fundamental human rights.
“Being suspected of illegal mining or any other offence does not remove a person’s right to humane treatment,” the union said.
The NUJ urged the relevant government, security, judicial, medical and human-rights institutions to conclude the investigation expeditiously and make its findings available to the public.
