From Dispossession To Dignity: Media Advocacy Helps Widowed Mother Rebuild Her Life In Uyo

In a country where countless widows slip through the cracks, one woman’s rescue shows what happens when journalism meets compassionate leadership.

Years after being dispossessed of her late husband’s property and left homeless with three daughters, Madam Comfort Okon Ekpenyong has finally found safety and dignity in a newly built ARISE Compassionate Home in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Her ordeal came to light in 2025 after the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom Chapter, took up her case following reports of how she was stripped of her husband’s land and forced to survive in a mud shelter later destroyed by a rainstorm.

For years, she cooked in the open and slept in an uncompleted building offered by a kind-hearted friend.

The sustained advocacy of NAWOJ triggered public attention and a swift government response.

Uyo Council Chairman, Uwemedimo Udo, stepped in to build and furnish a solar-powered home with borehole water for the displaced widow.

He also presented her with ₦500,000 to restart her small business, while other stakeholders, including his wife, donated essential items.

Representing Governor Umo Eno, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Emem Ibanga, hailed the intervention as proof that governance must put compassion first, especially for society’s most vulnerable.

Overcome with emotion, Ekpenyong described the new home as “a miracle”, saying years of rejection and uncertainty have given way to security, dignity and hope for her children.

Her story now stands as a reminder of the power of advocacy, and how responsive leadership can turn headlines into healing.
