NAF Targets 90% Aircraft Serviceability As Air Chief Champions Engineering Reforms

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is setting its sights on achieving an ambitious 90% aircraft serviceability rate by the fourth quarter of 2025, as part of a bold engineering reform agenda unveiled by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Aircraft Engineering Conference at NAF Headquarters, Abuja, the CAS emphasised that mission success in today’s air operations hinges on aircraft availability and airworthiness.

“Every platform must be maintained with precision, efficiency, and foresight,” he noted, stressing the importance of maintenance culture and strategic partnerships in strengthening air power.

With 15 new aircraft inducted over the last two years and 49 more expected by 2026, the Air Chief said the time is right for institutional reforms.

A major milestone was the launch of the Directorate of Aircraft Life Cycle Management, tasked with overseeing each aircraft’s journey from induction to retirement a move aimed at boosting long-term fleet readiness and self-reliance.

Themed “Enhancing Aircraft Serviceability in the NAF through Strong Maintenance Culture and Strategic Partnerships,” the two-day conference gathered top military engineers past and present to discuss smarter, tech-driven solutions for sustaining fleet health.

Technical papers presented sparked lively discussions on issues ranging from digital documentation to local and international collaboration in aircraft maintenance.

With a current serviceability rate of 72%, the Air Force is already making steady progress, supported by investments in skilled manpower, spare parts, and digital systems.

As the conference continues, the NAF’s message is clear a smarter, stronger, and more resilient force is on the rise, powered by engineering innovation and strategic foresight.
