Power Grid Sabotage: Police Arrest Suspect As Vandals Strip Six TCN Transmission Towers
Nigeria’s power infrastructure continues to face threats from vandals, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirming the arrest of a key suspect linked to the vandalism of six transmission towers along the Yola-Jalingo 330kV transmission line.
TCN said the damage was discovered during a routine patrol on 29 July when engineers found that critical bracing members had been removed from towers T995, T998, T999, T1002, T1003 and T1004.
About 130 tower components were reportedly stolen, leaving the structures at risk of collapse.
Following a joint operation with the Nigeria Police Force on 30 July, officers arrested a principal suspect on 1 August and recovered part of the stolen materials.
Investigators are pursuing other members of the suspected vandalism syndicate.
Condemning the attack on national power infrastructure, TCN urged host communities and the public to report suspicious activities around transmission installations, warning that vandalism threatens investments in the electricity sector and the reliability of power supply.
