NAWOJ FCT Seals Women Empowerment Alliance, Honours Mairo Al-Makura As Matron

In a time when women’s voices and support systems matter more than ever, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has strengthened its push for gender advocacy by partnering with the Tallafi Women and Youth Foundation and honouring its President, Dr Mairo Tanko Al-Makura, as the association’s Matron.

The recognition came during a courtesy visit led by NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, who described Dr Al-Makura as a compassionate leader whose humanitarian work continues to uplift women, widows and vulnerable communities.

She said the partnership would help both organisations expand advocacy for women and girls, especially in health, economic empowerment and social protection.

According to Ita Ikpang, NAWOJ FCT, which comprises over 350 practising female journalists across Abuja, remains committed to ethical journalism, gender equity and stronger interventions for women and children.

She noted that the association had closely followed the impactful work of the Tallafi Women and Youth Foundation in supporting widows, small businesses and vulnerable groups, adding that NAWOJ’s media strength would help amplify the foundation’s reach.

She also highlighted the association’s upcoming Marketplace Advocacy Event for the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration and sought Dr Al-Makura’s support to make it successful.

Responding, Dr Al-Makura expressed gratitude for the honour and reaffirmed her passion for women’s empowerment through education, healthcare and mentorship.

She urged women to stop waiting for opportunities and begin creating their own platforms.

“If they are not giving us a seat, we should build our own table and invite them to come. We are not competing; we want to be partners in progress,” she said.

She also stressed the need for women to mentor younger generations instead of seeing them as threats, noting that true leadership is helping others rise.

Dr Al-Makura assured NAWOJ FCT of her full cooperation, saying she remains committed to carrying women along and supporting initiatives that will improve their lives.

The visit marks another bold step in strengthening women-focused advocacy and building lasting partnerships for social impact across the FCT.
