Nigeria’s fight against HIV is entering a new phase, driven by innovation aimed at making prevention easier and more accessible for people at risk.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has confirmed the arrival of Long-Acting Injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), marking a major milestone in the country’s HIV prevention strategy.

In a press statement issued on 12th March, 2026, the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme, NASCP, announced that the injectable medication arrived in Nigeria on 10 March 2026.

The development was approved by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and supported through funding from the Global Fund.

Health officials say the introduction of Lenacapavir represents a significant advancement in expanding HIV prevention options, particularly for individuals who struggle with adherence to daily oral PrEP medication.

Unlike traditional oral prevention pills, Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable, designed to provide extended protection against HIV infection.

Experts believe the innovation could improve adherence, increase access to prevention services, and strengthen Nigeria’s broader response to the epidemic.

NASCP noted that the new option will be strategically integrated into the national HIV prevention programme in collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

The rollout will prioritise safe introduction, effective deployment, and strengthened service delivery across the country.

According to the programme’s National Coordinator and Federal Director, Dr Adebobola Bashorun, the arrival of Lenacapavir underscores Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging innovation and evidence-based interventions to accelerate progress toward controlling the HIV epidemic.

Health authorities emphasise that expanding prevention options is critical to reducing new infections and improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

With the addition of Lenacapavir to its prevention arsenal, Nigeria says it is taking decisive steps toward its long-term goal of ending HIV as a public health threat.
