Invest In Women To Strengthen Democracy and Press Freedom, IPC Urges

Around the world, societies that empower women tend to build stronger democracies, more vibrant media systems and inclusive leadership structures.

Yet, in many countries including Nigeria, women still face structural barriers that limit their participation in politics, governance and media leadership.

On World International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, the International Press Centre (IPC) called for greater investment in women, saying deliberate support for women is essential for strengthening democracy, press freedom and inclusive governance.

In a statement issued to commemorate the global event themed “Give to Gain,” IPC said the theme reflects a fundamental truth, that when societies intentionally invest in women through opportunities, platforms and protection, the entire society benefits.

The organisation noted that women have continued to play vital roles in advancing democratic values, strengthening media institutions and promoting inclusive governance.

However, it warned that persistent barriers such as gender inequality in political representation and limited access to leadership platforms still hinder women’s full participation in decision-making spaces.

IPC stressed that meaningful progress requires deliberate policy actions, including expanding opportunities for women in leadership and ensuring safe and inclusive media spaces for female journalists.

The organisation also called for the passage of the bill for special seats for women in Nigeria’s legislature and urged political parties to adopt the 35 per cent affirmative action for women’s participation in governance.

It further demanded improved working conditions for female journalists and greater representation of women in leadership positions within media organisations.

According to IPC, creating an enabling environment for the media to provide adequate and insightful coverage of issues affecting women and the girl-child is equally critical.

“Investments in women’s leadership and economic independence are essential because when women thrive, society prospers,” the organisation stated.

IPC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equity in the media and democratic governance while continuing to support platforms that empower women journalists and leaders.
