HIV Misinformation Threatens Public Health Gains, ANSACA Warns Residents

As social media increasingly shapes public understanding of health issues, the spread of unverified HIV statistics could undermine awareness efforts and fuel misinformation, the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has warned.

The Executive Director of ANSACA, Dr Nkem Okeke, urged residents to disregard unconfirmed HIV figures circulating online and rely on information from recognised health authorities.

Speaking during an interview with Udala FM on July 7, Okeke explained that HIV statistics must be interpreted carefully, as confirmed case numbers often depend on the scale, coverage and target population of testing exercises.

He said Anambra State has intensified community-based HIV testing through initiatives such as the Moonlight Testing programme, which operates between 7 p.m. and midnight in identified hotspots to reach key populations.

According to him, the programme aims to expand access to testing, link people who test positive to treatment and care, and provide preventive services, including counselling and free condoms.

Okeke also stressed that organisations seeking to conduct HIV-related programmes in government institutions or public facilities must obtain approval from ANSACA or the State Ministry of Health to ensure proper coordination and compliance with national guidelines.

Identifying adolescents and young people as a major priority for HIV prevention, the ANSACA boss called for stronger parental involvement, school-based education, community participation and sustained awareness campaigns to reduce risky behaviours and new infections.

He expressed optimism that expanded testing, early diagnosis, prompt treatment and sustained public education would strengthen efforts to eliminate HIV as a public health threat in Anambra State.
