IWD 2026: Mothers Caring For Sick Loved Ones In Hospitals Are Unsung Heroes – Fasawe

Behind many hospital recoveries are women whose quiet sacrifices rarely make headlines.

From sleeping on plastic chairs to skipping meals, countless mothers spend long days and nights beside hospital beds, offering care and comfort to loved ones battling illness.

The Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, has described such women as unsung heroes whose dedication often goes unnoticed.

Dr Fasawe made the remark during a visit to patients at Kuje General Hospital to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day.

She said the visit was aimed at recognising the courage and resilience of women who leave the comfort of their homes to care for sick relatives in hospital wards.

According to her, many mothers sacrifice their own comfort and routines, trading warm beds for plastic chairs and hospital corridors simply to remain by the side of those they love.

“These women are the quiet pillars of strength in our hospitals.

They set aside their routines, their work and often their own health simply to be present for someone they love,” she said.

Fasawe noted that while they are neither doctors nor nurses, mothers often play vital roles as caregivers and emotional support systems for patients.

“In moments of illness and vulnerability, a mother’s presence provides something medicine alone cannot give, love, comfort and hope,” she added.

She commended mothers who spend sleepless nights caring for loved ones, describing them as heroes whose compassion and resilience contribute significantly to healing.

International Women’s Day, observed every March 8, celebrates the achievements of women worldwide while advocating for gender equality and empowerment.
