Retired Police Chiefs Rally Behind Egbetokun, Endorse Reform Drive At Force HQ

In a rare show of cross-generational unity within Nigeria’s security leadership, a committee of retired Inspectors-General of Police on Tuesday paid a solidarity visit to the incumbent IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, signalling institutional backing for ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.

The meeting at the Louis Edet House drew members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police and other senior officers.

Among the retired IGPs present were Aliyu Attah, Sunday Ehindero, Mike Okiro, Ogbonna Onovo, Suleiman Abba and M.D. Abubakar.

Briefing the delegation, IGP Egbetokun highlighted key reforms recorded in the past two years, including the upgrade of the Intelligence Unit to a full department, the elevation of the Legal and Medical Units to directorates, the expansion of Police Mobile Force Squadrons from 74 to 80, and the creation of new Area Commands and Divisions.

He also disclosed the establishment of a Special Intervention Squad and stated that more than 141,000 officers had been promoted on merit, alongside compulsory ethics training to enhance professionalism.

Speaking for the visiting committee, IGP M.D. Abubakar (rtd) commended the pace of reforms and urged the incumbent to sustain the momentum, calling on serving officers to rally behind the reform agenda.

The visit, he said, reflected a shared commitment by past and present leaders to building a modern, trusted and capable police force.
