Nigeria Pledges Principled Diplomacy, Economic Partnerships At 2026 New Year Reception

In a world unsettled by shifting alliances and economic uncertainty, Nigeria is positioning itself as a steady, solutions-driven partner on the global stage.

At the 2026 New Year Reception with the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to principled, constructive and forward-looking diplomacy.

Addressing ambassadors and heads of international organisations, he outlined three pillars guiding Nigeria’s foreign policy this year: strategic autonomy, regional stability and responsible global partnership.

Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s push for economic diplomacy, citing sector-focused partnerships in infrastructure, agriculture, energy and digital connectivity, alongside regional trade efforts through the West Africa Economic Summit held during ECOWAS @50 celebrations.

He also underscored collaboration with the UNDP to strengthen democratic institutions in West Africa and the Sahel, describing security in the Sahel as a strategic priority.

The minister pointed to recent macroeconomic reforms — including a unified foreign exchange regime and strengthened capital markets, as signals of Nigeria’s readiness for long-term global investment.

He also sought diplomatic backing for Nigeria’s bids to key multilateral bodies, including the UN Human Rights Council and a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2030.

The reception, which brought together Nigeria’s top foreign policy officials and the diplomatic community, closed with renewed goodwill and a call for cooperation over confrontation.
