INEC Releases 2027 Election Timetable, Flags Key Dates For Primaries, Campaigns, Polls
With political calculations already underway across party lines, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the official tempo for Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections, outlining when parties must nominate candidates, begin campaigns and head to the polls.
In a timetable released in Abuja on Thursday, INEC fixed 20 February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while Governorship and State House of Assembly polls will hold on 6 March 2027, in line with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act 2022.
The Commission announced that party primaries will run from 22 May to 20 June 2026, with the submission of candidates’ nomination forms scheduled between 14-28 July 2026 for presidential and National Assembly contests, and 11-25 August 2026 for governorship and state assembly races.
Political parties will commence public campaigns on 23 September 2026 for presidential and National Assembly elections, and 7 October 2026 for governorship and state assembly contests, ending 24 hours before polling day.
INEC will publish the final list of candidates by 15 August 2026 (Presidential/National Assembly) and 6 October 2026 (Governorship/State Assembly), while the official register of voters is due on 11 January 2027.
The Notice of Poll will follow on 21 January 2027, with parties required to submit the names of polling agents by late December 2026 and early January 2027.
By releasing the schedule a full year ahead of the polls, INEC says the move is aimed at curbing speculation, strengthening compliance with the law, and giving political actors and voters ample time to prepare for what promises to be a keenly contested election cycle.
