2027: Every Action Will Reflect Nigerians’ Will – INEC
With preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 General Election gathering pace, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that its decisions and deployments will be guided by law, transparency and the will of the electorate.
INEC Acting Chairman, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, gave the assurance on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving the African Union (AU) Pre-Election Needs Assessment Mission, led by former Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister, Demeke Mekonnen.
Gumus described the AU mission as an opportunity for peer assessment and institutional learning, stressing that credible elections require continuous scrutiny and improvement.
She said INEC was already undertaking extensive operational, technological and logistical preparations, drawing lessons from recent off-cycle elections in Anambra, the FCT, Ekiti and Osun states.
The Acting Chairman identified areas where AU support would be valuable, including digital training for ad hoc personnel, tackling election-related disinformation and deepfakes, strengthening the Election Monitoring and Support Centre, and improving inclusion and gender mainstreaming.
Gumus also reaffirmed INEC’s independence and neutrality, saying electoral integrity was a shared responsibility involving political parties, security agencies, civil society, the media, development partners and voters.
She assured that under the current Commission led by Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, “every administrative decision” would comply with the law, while technical deployments would promote transparency and the final outcome would reflect the sovereign will of Nigerian voters.
The AU mission said it would assess Nigeria’s readiness in areas including voter registration, electoral technology, logistics, funding, inclusion, security coordination, dispute resolution and results management, while identifying possible areas for technical assistance.
