2027 Trust Test: IGP Disu Seeks NIPR Support To Rebuild Public Confidence In Police
Public trust may be won or lost in the everyday conduct and communication of police officers, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has said.
Disu made the submission on Tuesday in Abuja when he received a delegation of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), led by its President and Chairman of Council, Dr Ike Neliaku, at Force Headquarters.
The IGP said the Police and NIPR share a responsibility to strengthen public confidence through professionalism, transparency, fairness and effective communication.
He called for NIPR’s support in specialised communication training for police personnel and the development of a coherent messaging framework to better communicate the sacrifices and contributions of officers to public safety and national security.
Disu also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to policing by consent and a service-oriented culture anchored on professionalism, empathy, accountability and respect for human rights.
The NIPR delegation, meanwhile, sought police support for security planning and coverage of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum and Africa Charter Forum, scheduled to hold at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, with more than 3,000 delegates expected from 126 countries.
The Institute also invited the IGP to deliver a keynote address and encouraged police officers to participate as registered delegates.
The meeting underscores the growing recognition that effective policing requires not only operational strength, but also credible communication and public confidence.
