INEC Fixes 2027 Poll Dates, Warns Parties Against Breaching Timelines

Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are now firmly on the clock, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rolling out a timetable that sets the pace for party primaries, campaigns, and nationwide voting, sending a clear signal that there will be no room for delay or rule-bending.

At a press conference in Abuja on Friday, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, formally released the Notice of Election and the schedule of activities for the 2027 polls, dismissing recent speculations and unauthorised “election dates” circulating in the public space.

According to the timetable, Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for 20 February 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are slated for 6 March 2027, in line with constitutional provisions on election timelines ahead of the expiration of the current tenures.

Amupitan said INEC is monitoring the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act at the National Assembly but stressed that the Commission would operate strictly within existing laws until any changes are duly enacted.

He warned political parties to adhere to statutory timelines for primaries, nominations and campaigns, noting that INEC would enforce compliance.

Reaffirming the Commission’s independence, the INEC boss pledged deeper deployment of technology, continuous updating of the voters’ register, closer collaboration with security agencies and expanded voter education to deliver credible elections.

He called on parties, candidates and supporters to shun violence and uphold internal democracy, stressing that the success of the 2027 elections is a collective responsibility.
