AFN Clarifies January 15 Observance, Urges Media To Use ‘Celebration and Remembrance Day’
Beyond the solemn wreaths and marching boots lies a deeper message of balance, honouring courage in service today while remembering sacrifice yesterday.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has reaffirmed that January 15 is officially marked as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, not merely Remembrance Day.
In a press release signed by the Director Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Abuja, Major General Samaila Uba, the military explained that the updated name reflects the dual essence of the occasion: celebrating serving personnel of the Armed Forces while paying tribute to fallen heroes who gave their lives in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the safety of its people.
The annual observance is preceded by a week-long series of activities, culminating in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony on January 15.
According to the AFN, the name change was formally adopted to ensure living officers and men receive due recognition alongside the honoured dead and urged members of the media, the guardians of the fourth estate, to adopt the correct nomenclature in all future reportage.
The Armed Forces also expressed appreciation for the media’s consistent support in the fight against insecurity, while calling for even stronger collaboration going forward.
