CAJ President Mourns Seven Journalists Killed In Gombe Road Tragedy
In moments like this, the newsroom falls silent, not for lack of stories, but from the weight of collective grief.
Former National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and current President of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of seven journalists in a fatal road accident in Gombe State.
In a condolence message issued on Monday, Isiguzo described the incident as a “dark and painful moment” for the journalism profession, noting that the tragedy struck even deeper as the victims were members of the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, the home council of the Union’s incumbent National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the NUJ national leadership, the Gombe State Council, as well as the families and colleagues of the deceased journalists, while praying for the speedy recovery of those injured in the crash.
“These were dedicated journalists who travelled to honour a colleague and returned no more,” Isiguzo said, lamenting that their deaths represent a profound loss to the NUJ, the media industry, and the journalism fraternity across Nigeria and beyond.
Calling for unity and compassion, he urged journalists nationwide to stand together in solidarity during the period of mourning, praying for strength for the Union’s leadership and comfort for the bereaved families.
“Our hearts are broken, but our collective spirit remains unbowed,” he added, praying for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the seven journalists lost their lives in a lone accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State while returning from a wedding ceremony.
