ECOWAS Tightens Watch As Guinea Heads To The Polls

With Guinea standing at a critical democratic crossroads, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has stepped up its engagement to ensure a credible and peaceful presidential election scheduled for 28 December 2025.

Ahead of the polls, the Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM), Mr Abdoulie Janneh, on 25 December in Conakry, took part in a high-level briefing session for 133 ECOWAS short-term electoral observers deployed across the country.

The session underscored ECOWAS’ commitment to transparency, professionalism and regional democratic standards.

The briefing was attended by key regional stakeholders, including the Deputy Head of the Mission, Senator Lawan Gana Guba; ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah; the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea, Louis Blaise Aka Brou; and Mr Abdou Kolley, Director of Cabinet to the President of the ECOWAS Commission.

Representatives of the ECOWAS Parliament, Court of Justice and the Committee of Permanent Representatives were also present.

Later in the day, the EOM delegation paid a courtesy visit to the General Directorate of Elections (DGE) to assess the state of preparedness.

The Director General of Elections, Mrs Djenabou Touré Camara, assured the mission that all arrangements would be fully in place ahead of election day.

As Guinea prepares to go to the polls, the presence of ECOWAS observers signals a strong regional resolve to support a credible electoral process and reinforce democratic governance in the sub-region.
