ECOWAS Steps In Early As Guinea Nears Presidential Poll
With just days to Guinea’s presidential election, early diplomatic engagement is shaping the tone for credibility and regional confidence in the process.
The Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM), Mr Abdoulie Janneh, has begun high-level consultations with key election stakeholders in Conakry ahead of the 28 December 2025 presidential poll.
Mr Janneh arrived in the Guinean capital on 23 December and immediately commenced strategic meetings aimed at reinforcing transparency, cooperation and peaceful conduct of the election.
On 24 December, he met jointly with the heads of election observation missions from the African Union, the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) and the Mano River Union, alongside the Secretary General of Guinea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Guineans Abroad, representing the Minister, Morissanda Kouyaté.
The ECOWAS mission chief and his counterparts also paid courtesy visits to the First President of the Supreme Court, Mr Fodé Bangoura, and Prime Minister, Amadou Oury Bah, underscoring the regional bloc’s commitment to institutional dialogue and respect for constitutional order.
The early presence and coordinated approach of ECOWAS and other international bodies signal heightened regional attention on Guinea’s electoral process, as West Africa continues to prioritise democratic stability and peaceful transitions.
