NUJ Kano Marks One Year Of Transformative Leadership As State Prepares To Host NEC Meeting
The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is marking one year of what members describe as “transformative and exemplary” leadership under its chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi.
Since taking office on 10 August 2024, Dederi and his team have delivered on key parts of their five-point agenda, including rebranding the council, upholding journalistic ethics, enhancing member welfare, and building capacity through training.
The leadership has also initiated renovations at the Press Centre and revived the union’s clinic for members and their families.
The past year has seen the council actively participate in major national events, such as the NUJ’s 70th anniversary in Abuja and the National Triennial Delegates Conference in Owerri.
Locally, the team has overseen smooth elections for various NUJ chapels and secured approval to establish five new ones, including an online media chapel to boost engagement with emerging media platforms.
The NUJ Kano leadership has also strengthened ties with the state government, appointing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the union’s Grand Patron and recognising him as the NUJ’s “Most Media Friendly Governor” for 2025.
As part of the celebrations, the state council is gearing up to host the NUJ’s National Executive Council meeting from 11 to 13 August a gathering expected to draw media leaders from across Nigeria.
“Slow but steady wins the race,” said Chairman Dederi, thanking members for their support and pledging to make the remaining two years of his term even more impactful.
