FG Backs Dental Technologists, Unveils First-Ever Summit To Shape Profession’s Future
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of dental technologists in Nigeria’s healthcare system, launching the maiden Dental Technologists Summit in Abuja to chart a strategic future for the profession.
Speaking at the opening, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, hailed dental technologists as vital to restorative and rehabilitative care, stressing their role in “restoring smiles, improving oral health and enhancing overall well-being.”
He urged the Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria (DTRBN) to harness digital tools to stamp out quackery and ensure efficient registration and regulation.
Permanent Secretary, Kachollom S. Daju, described dental technologists as “the backbone of modern dentistry,” crafting crowns, bridges, and dentures that restore confidence and quality of life.
She noted the profession’s growth from City and Guild certifications to degree programmes at institutions like the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu.
DTRBN Registrar, Mallam Idris Ahmad Bappah, said the two-day event themed “Dental Technologists, Past, Present and Future” offers a platform for dialogue, innovation, and partnerships to drive systemic change.
The summit, held at the National Merit Award House, gathered policymakers, researchers, students, and practitioners to explore the profession’s evolution and its future in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
