Imo Celebrates Super Falcons Stars With Land and ₦30 Million Each

In a grand gesture of pride and appreciation, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has honoured seven indigenes of the state who played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s victorious campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

At a celebratory dinner held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Owerri, on Saturday, 2nd August 2025, the Governor announced a reward of a plot of land in a prime location and a cash gift of ₦30 million each to the players and technical team members of Imo extraction.

The honoured Super Falcons stars include Africa’s top goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, as well as Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu.

Governor Uzodimma, visibly elated, praised the players for bringing honour not just to Nigeria, but especially to Imo State, noting:

“Imo people are happy with our girls and will continue to support them. We are proud that the majority of the Falcons and Africa’s best goalkeeper—hail from our land.”

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for setting a national precedent in recognising the players’ excellence, stating that Imo was simply “domesticating” the honour to highlight the state’s contribution.

The event attracted high-profile attendees, including Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, federal and state legislators, party chieftains, top government officials, traditional rulers, and elder statesmen.

Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, credited the celebration to the Governor’s unwavering commitment to sports, calling it “a result of the state’s sustained investment in youth and talent development.”

As the toast was raised by Chief Bob Njemanze, the evening not only celebrated the Falcons’ WAFCON glory, but also reaffirmed Imo State’s role as a powerhouse of women’s football in Africa.
